about
This song is a collaboration between myself and Tomáš Kačo. We were brought together in 2019 by Lenka Pastorčáková, the author of a book titled Žárlivka. In her book, Lenka writes about a character, a woman, who becomes pregnant. She is a singer and the father of her child a pianist. Believing that music can have a certain calming and positive effect on prenatal babies, they sing and play to their unborn child a song of their love, convinced that on some level the baby can feel and understand its meaning.
Lenka wished to have an actual song written, to accompany her book. She approached me to write lyrics, knowing I had been pregnant myself not long ago, and she asked Tomáš to write the music. I had said yes to this invitation because of three things: I loved the piano piece Tomas had composed, I liked the idea of writing about the things I felt while being pregnant, and believed I would enjoy the challenge of writing lyrics in Czech. At the time, it was not possible for Tomáš and I to meet in one place, so we collaborated long distance, me in Iceland with my husband Mio and Tomas in LA with his wife Grace.
I ended up writing the lyrics about the profound connection one feels toward one’s unborn child, imagining what it will be like to hold them, to gaze upon their face, to fill with excitement at the thought of living one’s life with a deeper meaning and greater purpose. How we indeed talk to our babies, whether in our minds or out loud, expressing our hopes and dreams, even our insecurities and fears, revealing a new kind of vulnerability and humility.
Tomáš and Grace did a wonderful job making the music feel tender, gentle, innocent and full of wonder, like a child. The music made the words come easy, resulting in a lullaby that pulls one into a womb like safe space.
I had additionally asked my dear friend and violin virtuoso Marja Gaynor to sprinkle some of her magic over the existing recording. Since I was a child and attended one of my first concerts, the piano, violin and vocals represent somewhat of a holy trinity to me, which I was very happy to accomplish with this piece.
Thinking of the artwork, for this particular song, I did not have to look very far. Every day I look upon a certain painting in our studio, and every day leading up to this release I have though to myself how much I look forward to having the right song to combine with the centre piece of this beautiful art by Jone Debesis.
It is a joy to finally get to release this little precious of a song.
Thank you, as always, for receiving it.
lyrics
Až Tu Budeš S Námi
Jestlipak mě slyšíš,
Na tom místě, kde klid vládne,
Kde nic ti nechybí,
Nemáš obavy žádné.
Jen si pěkně rosteš,
Tělo s duší se pojí,
Já snažím si představit,
Podobu tvojí.
Všemu co nás spolu čeká,
Se láskyplně oddávám,
Zavřu oči a sním o tom,
Že tě v náručích mám.
Nadešla ta chvíle,
Životu hlubší smysl dát,
Nemůžu se dočkat,
Tvým strážným andělem se stát.
Už to tak v životě chodí,
Že smích často pláč předchází,
A slzy jak štěstí,
Tak smutek provází.
Svět je plný barev,
Však i tmavších odstínů,
Až tu budeš s námi,
Tu temnou stránku světu prominu.
(English translation)
When You Are Here With Us
I wonder, can you hear me,
In your dwelling reigned by peace,
Where you want for nothing,
For all comes to you with ease.
You just keep on growing,
Unifying body and soul,
While I try and imagine,
Your likeness as a whole.
To all that still awaits us,
I surrender without fear,
I close my eyes and daydream about,
Having you hear.
The hour is upon us,
To make our lives mean something more,
Than they ever could have meant,
To anyone before.
And so it often is the case, that,
After sunshine comes the rain,
It is also true, that
Sometimes joy precedes pain.
The world is full of colour,
Including those of a darker shade
But when you are finally here with us,
Love shall conquer hate.
